For example, the regions in central and southern Italy are all about the <em>Cena della Vigilia<\/em> (dinner on Christmas Eve), while the north focuses mainly on the <em>Pranzo di Natale<\/em> (Christmas lunch). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But some rules apply to most places, such as the tradition of eating a fish-based or meat-free dinner on Christmas Eve, and enjoying dried fruit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiainitalia.com\/blog\/13-italian-christmas-desserts\/\">famous desserts like Panettone<\/a> throughout the Holiday Season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Christmas Table in Northern Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no Christmas in Piedmont without some <em>agnolotti<\/em> pasta and the <em>gran bollito misto<\/em> stew, matched with colourful sauces such as the <em>bagnet ross e verd<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In Liguria you will find vegetarian or meat ravioli and the <em>cappon magro<\/em>, made with fish and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, one of the traditional dishes in Lombardy is <em>anguilla cotta al cartoccio<\/em>, or baked eel. In Veneto, locals prefer polenta with salted codfish and boiled meat with a horseradish sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bordering with Austria and Slovenia, the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia features a soup made with turnip and cotechino, called <em>brovada e muset<\/em>, followed by tripe sauce, cheese and capon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-80784\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.studiainitalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/gushmag.jpg\" alt=\"Brovada e muset (photo by gushmag.it)\" class=\"wp-image-80784\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Brovada e muset (photo by gushmag.it)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201c<em>A Tavola<\/em>\u201d in Central Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Emilia Romagna there are cities like Bologna where Christmas is celebrated with many meat-based dishes, such as tortellini and passatelli in broth, tagliatelle and lasagne, prosciutto ham and culatello, but also pumpkin tortelli with herbs. And there are towns like Modena where fish is preferred, especially spaghetti with tuna, mackerel, anchovies and tomatoes; and fried or stewed salted codfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This same fish is the protagonist in the region of Lazio, where there is an abundance of fried mixed vegetables and capitone eel. In Rome, on Christmas Eve locals eat fish soup or pasta with broccoli and <em>arzilla<\/em> (ray fish) broth; while on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> of December they enjoy the typical <em>abbacchio <\/em>(roast lamb) with potatoes, and cappelletti in broth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What about Tuscany? On Christmas Eve, many eat the <em>capitone <\/em>(female eel) which, due to its similarity to the snake, symbolises the victory of humans over Satan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Calabria boasts cured meats like <em>capicollo<\/em> bacon, <em>soppressata<\/em> and sausages, but also spaghetti with breadcrumbs and anchovies, and goat or stockfish served with saut\u00e9ed broccoliIn Sardinia you can taste the <em>culurgiones de casu<\/em>, which are ravioli filled with tomato sauce, and the <em>malloreddus<\/em>, or small semolina gnocchi with sausage sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And Sicily\u2019s Christmas cuisine is characterized by orange salad, herring and onions, chicken broth, and <em>sarde a beccafico <\/em>(sardines stuffed with raisins, pine nuts and breadcrumbs).
