Tropea is a seaside resort with impressive scenery in the region of Calabria, in the south of Italy. This stretch of coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea is called the Costa degli Dei, the ‘Coast of the Gods’, and it is hugely admired and known as one of Italy’s finest summer holiday destinations. The coastline curves outwards in a large hilly bulge, boasting dramatic cliffs, sunny beaches, and a string of little resorts and campsites. Tropea is the busiest and most attractive of these seaside towns; with a historic centre perched on cliffs above the sea.
Tropea, easily wins the contest for prettiest town on the Calabria Tyrrhenian coast, with its old buildings built in simple golden stone right into the cliffs. Tropea is also one of the best preserved and most beautiful historical centres in this southern region of Italy. On a clear day, from Tropea, you can see the volcanic island of Stroboli that can be visited departing from Tropea in the summer.
When to go?
If you want to enjoy the beaches around Tropea, the best time to visit is anytime between May and November. Winters are very warm and quite, which gives you a good chance to enjoy the Mediterranean outside the high season.
