The art of book binding requires passion, patience and creativity.

You can create your own original booklets or albums. Have you tried to do it on your own but with no successful results? Are you a book binder interested in learning how Italian book binders work?

Our workshop offers 1, 2 or more weeks of bookbinding courses. You can book a 24, 48, 72 or 96 hour course and distribute your hours along the number of weeks of your choice.

During the course you will learn the techniques for making books and binding covers for albums and diaries.

First, you will create objects using different techniques. Secondly, you will use colour shaded paper, fabric or leather, sand and different materials.

You will also learn closure techniques and you will be creating decorated cards and envelopes.

Through this course you will also learn leather bookbinding and restoration of paper if you wish to take a more intensive or longer course.

These courses are very practical and hands-on. The book binding course takes place in a real Italian “bottega” with a local artisan, a master concerned with maintaining Italian bookbinding traditions alive.

That is why it is important for you to acquire knowledge directly in the book binder’s studio.

The bookbinding course will allow you to learn fast and make quality items in short time.

The craftman will follow you in every single step. You will also learn the tricks of the trade!

This course is individual and it is taught in Italian. Since lessons are one to one, the programme adapts to your own needs and requests. You can also apply for an interpretation service.

Thank you Studiainitalia for all your help. I had such a fantastic time in Florence and enjoyed every minute of the bookbinding course with Simonetta. She is the best! I had no bookbinding experience and was able to make two beautiful books in 1 week.
Also thank you Federica for informing me on all the course details. This was all very clear and helpful! I can recommend this course to all paper and book lovers.

My bookmaking experience with Simonetta exceeded expectations. By the end of the workshop I went away with things — both tangible as well as intangible — that will last a life time. Fun!

I took the bookbinding course for two weeks, very recently. Thanks to the teacher Simonetta and studiainitalia members Federica and Lara, the whole experience was greater than I expected.Simonetta is not only very experienced professional on her field, she is also a very good teacher. And a lovely person as well.It doesn’t matter if you are just a starter at this field or someone who is already in it but would like to learn some other techniques on bookbinding, this is a good place to go.

  6. Judith

I have done the two weeks bookbinding. With Simonetta. I loved every minute. I learnt a lot and was able to start at the appropriate level of experience.I did not speak Italian but it did not matter at all. It is a practical course and Simonetta can speak English well.I had time to make 3 books of differing types. The materials were part of the tuition fee so there were no extra costs.I travelled from Australia specially for the course and had not travelled much on my own before. I had no problems finding my way around. I enjoyed shopping at the markets and cooking. It was a wonderful cultural experience. I can only recommend to anyone that they do it. My teacher was warm, friendly and very supportive. She made the whole experience amazing.Studiainitalia are very helpful. They will answer any questions you have promptly. There are extra activities if you want to do them in weekends and after school finishes for the day. I great time in Florence. It’s a beautiful city.

  7. Agnes

I attended the short bookbinding course this september. It was just amazing! Two weeks of working with beautiful florentine paper, thread, leather and parchment. I learnt so much from Simonetta and I absolutely loved her Studio! She (seemingly) knows everything about bookbinding and retauration and didn’t hesitate about sharing her knowledge. We (her and us two “students”) shared wonderful moments and talked and laughed a lot whilst binding our books.Federica was also very kind and always available (even before I was attending the course) when there were any problems or question from my part.I absolutely recommend a course with studiainitalia, it was an experience I won’t forget. And rest assured that I’ll be back!

Bookbinding in Florence with Studiainitalia is an unforgettable, incredible experience. I didn’t want it to end. I didn’t want to leave. I’m so grateful for Federica for this opportunity, for Lara’s wonderful guidance and for Simonetta’s expertise.Simonetta is one of the most incredible people I’ve met anywhere in the world. Her studio is a delight to the senses and her talents and artistry are second to none. My friend Agnes and I were transported into historical Florence through the art of bookbinding. We had the pleasure of working with the finest materials. The bonus was learning to speak Italian along the way.It is a dream come true and I cannot wait to return.Grazie mille Simonetta, Agnes, Federica, Lara and all of the Studiainitalia Team.
