Frequently Asked Questions Learn Italian in Italy

Planification and Personalization

Why should I book through Studiainitalia instead of directly with a school?

When you book with us, you get the same official price as the school but with the added value of our 20 years of expertise. We don’t just list schools; we hand-pick only one premium center per city. You benefit from our personal concierge service, local knowledge, and an extra layer of security and support that a single school cannot provide.

How do I choose the best destination for my course?

Italy offers a world of different experiences. To help you decide, we have grouped our destinations by their unique character: the Art Capitals (Rome, Florence, Venice), the Gastronomic Hubs (Bologna, Turin), the Mediterranean Coast (Salerno, Sicily), or the “Slow Living” medieval gems of Tuscany. We are happy to provide personalized advice based on your lifestyle and interests.

Are all Italian levels available? How will I know which one is mine?

Yes, we cater to all levels, from absolute beginners (A1) to advanced students (C2), following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. You will take a placement test—either before departure or on your first day—to ensure you are placed in a class that perfectly matches your skills.

Can I book a personalized course or study for more than 4 weeks?

Absolutely. While we offer standard intensive courses, we specialize in “Creative Tourism.” This means we can tailor programs combining Italian with cooking, art history, or fashion. You can also book as many weeks as you need, and even extend your stay once you are in Italy; we will handle all the logistics for you.

What is the teaching method and what language is used in class?

Our schools follow the “Total Immersion” method. This means Italian is spoken from day one, even for beginners. This communicative approach is designed to build your confidence quickly, ensuring you can interact with locals and navigate daily life in Italy with ease.

What kind of students will I meet in class?

Our students share a high academic and cultural profile. You will find a diverse yet like-minded community: from university students seeking a serious academic environment to professionals, seniors, and lifelong learners who value quality, safety, and an authentic cultural experience.

Booking, Payments & Cancellation

How and when do I pay for my course and accommodation?

To secure your spot, a deposit is paid to Studiainitalia. The remaining balance for the tuition must be settled at least 30 days before the course starts. Regarding accommodation, for total transparency and to ensure you get the direct local rate, payments are usually made directly to the language school or the host upon your arrival in Italy.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans can change. If you cancel in writing more than 45 days before the course starts, you only forfeit the initial deposit. For cancellations less than 45 days before commencement, the full fee applies. However, we value our students’ investment: in many cases, we can arrange for your deposit to be held as credit for a future course within one year.

Does Studiainitalia handle my Visa application?

No, the visa application is a personal process that must be done by the student at the Italian Embassy. However, we provide full support: once your payment is received, we issue the official invitation letter and enrollment certificates required for your application. If your visa is officially refused, we will refund your payment (minus a handling fee and bank charges) upon receipt of the official refusal document.

What happens if I need to change my booking dates?

Flexibility is part of our boutique service. You can make alterations to your course dates or accommodation up to 14 days before your arrival. Changes made within 14 days of the start date may incur a small administrative fee of €150 to cover the local reorganization with schools and hosts.

Are there any hidden costs I should know about?

We believe in total transparency. Our fees cover the course and accommodation placement. Please note that some schools may require a small fee for textbooks (approx. €20-30) on the first day. Also, if you pay by credit card or PayPal, a small surcharge applies to cover transaction costs, while bank transfers remain a standard option.

What is the Studiainitalia STAR Programme and why should I join?

The STAR Programme is our premium support upgrade designed for total peace of mind. For a single annual fee (currently discounted to €29), you get access to an exclusive emergency mobile number for assistance during weekends when schools are closed. Additionally, as a STAR member, you receive a 5%-10% discount on your second and third courses in Italy—a benefit you can even share with a friend. It’s the perfect safety net for students who value constant support and plan to continue their Italian journey.

The On-Site Experience

What kind of support will I have during my stay in Italy?

You are never alone. You have double layers of support: the local staff at the school director’s office for daily logistics, and our team at Studiainitalia for any major concerns. From helping you find a local doctor to advising on weekend travel, we act as your local point of contact to ensure a smooth, worry-free experience.

What happens if I’m the only student at my level?

We guarantee your learning. If a group for your specific level doesn’t meet the minimum number of participants, the school will convert your group hours into private or semi-private lessons. This ensures you cover the same pedagogical program with even more personalized attention from the teacher.

How do the cultural activities and excursions work?

Our courses follow the “Creative Tourism” philosophy. Beyond the classroom, schools organize activities like wine tastings, guided historical walks, and cooking workshops. These are designed for culturally curious students who want to experience Italy like a local, avoiding the typical tourist crowds.

Are textbooks and learning materials included in the price?

Material is always included in the course cost to ensure you receive the most up-to-date materials tailored to your exact level. Some schools may charge a small fee for textbooks and learning kits (usually between €20 and €30) on your first day. All other school facilities, such as Wi-Fi and library access, are included.

How is the accommodation selected and managed?

We only partner with schools that have a dedicated accommodation department. They manage a network of hand-picked local hosts and apartments. By having the schools manage this directly, you get immediate on-site support if you need anything regarding your stay, all while under the quality umbrella and supervision of Studiainitalia.

What happens if a bank holiday falls during my course?

Italian bank holidays are a great chance to experience local festivals! Please note that schools are closed on official holidays and usually lessons are not made up or refunded in all the schools. We recommend checking the Italian holiday calendar when planning your trip, or simply ask us for the best dates to travel.

Do I receive a certificate at the end of the course?

Yes. Upon successful completion of your program, you will receive a certificate of attendance from the school. This document specifies the type of course you took, the duration, and the level of Italian proficiency achieved according to the CEFR standards.

Travel & Logistics

How do I get to my destination once I arrive in Italy?

Italy is well-connected by an extensive train network (Trenitalia and Italo). Most of our schools are located in city centers, easily reachable by public transport or taxi from the main stations. For a stress-free start to your journey, we can also arrange a private airport transfer directly to your accommodation.

Is travel insurance necessary?

While we strive for a seamless experience, we highly recommend that all students take out a comprehensive personal insurance policy. This should cover medical expenses, personal liability, and potential trip cancellations. Having this in place ensures you are protected against any unforeseen circumstances during your time abroad.

What should I know about Italian customs and daily life?

Adapting to the local lifestyle is part of the charm! Business hours, meal times, and local etiquette might differ from your home country. We provide all our students with a “Welcome Guide” containing practical tips on local customs to help you blend in and enjoy the authentic Italian way of life from day one.

What happens if I decide to cut my course short?

We are confident you will love your experience; however, please note that once the course has commenced, tuition and accommodation fees are non-refundable. If you have any concerns during your stay, we encourage you to speak with us immediately so we can help adjust your experience to meet your expectations.

Life in Italy & Practical Tips (The Insider’s Guide)

What is the cost of living for a student in Italy?

While prices vary between cities like Milan and smaller towns like Salerno, we recommend budgeting around €200–€300 per week for meals and personal expenses. A typical espresso is around €1.20, and a traditional trattoria dinner usually costs between €20 and €35. We provide a detailed local guide for each city once you book.

How do I handle mobile data and internet access?

All our partner schools offer free Wi-Fi. For your daily life, we recommend getting a local SIM card (we can advise you on the best providers like Iliad or TIM) or ensuring your roaming plan is active. Most Italian city centers have excellent 5G coverage.

What is the best way to travel between Italian cities?

Italy’s high-speed rail (Frecciarossa) is world-class. If you are staying for several weeks, we recommend booking train tickets in advance via Trenitalia or Italo to save up to 60%. This is the perfect way to visit nearby cities like Florence or Naples during your weekends.

Do I need to speak Italian before I arrive?

Not at all! Many of our students are absolute beginners. However, learning basic greetings and “survival” phrases will enhance your experience. Your teachers will help you with this from day one, and you’ll find that Italians are very patient and appreciative when you try to speak their language. If, on the other hand, you need a visa, you will be required to have prior knowledge.
